In our opinion the most beautiful part of Slovenia offering a wealth of mountain scenery and activities (from skiing to hiking, paragliding and mountain biking), and some of Europe’s most beautiful alpine lakes (Bled & Bohinj) and rivers (The Soca in particular) with a huge range of water based activities including rafting, kayaking, canyoning or just relaxing by the water’s edge. The excellent resort towns of Kranjska Gora, Bovec, Kobarid, Bled & Bohinj ensure that there are facilities on hand for an enjoyable stay all year round and the historic towns of Skofja Loka and Radovljica add to the region’s cultural credentials. If you are looking for an alpine holiday Slovenia's North West is the region for you.
So close to the Julian Alps and yet so different – the Italian border region is a great place to visit on holiday in Slovenia and features some of Slovenia’s most beautiful wine growing regions and best wines. The Goriska Brda near to Nova Gorica region is particularly nice, often compared to Tuscany. Much of the area just inland from the coast is a wonderful karstic landscape, dotted with lovely stone built hilltop villages, some extraordinary cave systems, impressive castles and the world famous Lipica horse stud, home to the Lippizaner throughbreds. On the Slovenian Adriatic itself, Piran – a stunning Venetian town on a peninsula – is the main attraction, with a handful of other attractive towns / resorts (Izola, Koper, Portoroz) and plenty of opportunities for eating great seafood, relaxing on the beach and a variety of watersports. If you are looking for a Mediterranean style holiday Slovenia's Italian border area and coastal zone is the region for you.
Many visitors to Ljubljana come away wondering why they had never heard more about it before. The main draw is a compact, easy to explore and delightful medieval core overlooked by imposing castle and a friendly atmosphere with an abundance of excellent cafes, bars and restaurants running along the Ljubljanica river in the centre of the old town. In Summer the city plays host to a range of outdoor concerts and events, often free of charge. In the Winter many visitors come to experience the wonderful Christmas markets offering a wide range of artisan products in a lovely setting along the banks of the river. Ljubljana is less than 90 minutes from all of our Retreats so a perfect day trip and an essential holiday Slovenia experience.
One of the lesser visited parts of Slovenia, the Southern region nonetheless has its fair share of things of interest to see and do for thos on holiday in Slovenia. Two rivers, the Kolpa and Krka and Lake Cerknica all offer opportunities for kayaking, rafting and other watersports. There is great hiking to be had in the Kocevje Rog and Sneznik mountains, and, as with much of Slovenia, the opportunity to sample great wines in the valleys. The area is dotted with plenty of historic castles, monasteries and villages and some of Slovenia’s best spas.
A calming sense of rural peace and tranquility pervades the North Eastern corner of Slovenia. Generally flatter than the rest of the country, the North East offers plenty of beautiful wine growing areas and excellent wines, in particular between Ljutomer and Ormoz, as well as a number of spas. Ptuj is one of the country’s best preserved medieval towns with wonderful architecture in the old town which leads up to the castle. The centre of Maribor is also very pretty and well worth a visit.
The Kamniske Savinjske Alps are less well known than the Julian Alps, but are equally beautiful and unspoilt, with the Logar valley frequently described as one of Europe’s most perfect Alpine valleys. Kamnik is a lovely medieval town to the North East of Ljubljana which lies at the foothills of these mountains. The Pohorje Massif is a lower, but nonetheless very pretty alpine / subalpine area which stretches East to Maribor. Skiing and other mountain pursuits are possible across the region with the focus on the resorts at Krvavec, Rogla & Mariborsko Pohorje.
